About SHSL Coalition

Under the leadership of Bishop James Dixon II, SHSL Coalition first came together in 2019 following the introduction of the Medicaid Fiscal Accountability Proposed Rule (MFAR). SHSL Coalition is a nationwide coalition of faith leaders, social justice organizations, providers and Medicaid advocates committed to advancing the health and well-being of our nation’s vulnerable communities.

SHSL Coalition tirelessly advocates against Medicaid policies that threaten the stability of the healthcare safety net. For the members of SHSL Coalition, access to affordable healthcare is a sacred human right.

Saving Hospitals Saves Lives: Texas NAACP Calls for Restoration of CMS Medicaid Funding

Bishop James Dixon, President of the Houston Chapter of the NAACP and Founder of the Saving Hospitals Saves Coalition, protests the federal government’s withholding of vital sources of supplemental Medicaid funding. The protests highlighted the related threat to access to care for Medicaid beneficiaries.

Texas Faith Leaders & Senators Hold Press Conference on CMS’ Informational Bulletin

AUSTIN — A bipartisan group of state senators, led by Senator Bryan Hughes and Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, stood with faith leaders, including Bishop Dixon of the Saving Hospitals Saves Lives Coalition, at the Texas Capitol Wednesday, June 7, 2023, to push back on looming changes to Medicaid that could strip almost $9 billion out of the system and leave hundreds of thousands more Texans uninsured.
